Dirtbag things to do near Skaha, BC, Canada

We love exploring new places travelling cheap! My pet hate is googling things to do in a place and finding blogs or TripAdvisor filled with expensive tours and entry fees. Usually you have to go and see for yourself, crossing your fingers you’ll stumble across some gold activities that won’t cost you a pretty penny. But lucky you you’ve stumbled across this blog first. Hard work done for you.

Climb at Skaha Bluffs

If you're headed to Skaha, pop your rope and draws in the car; you’ll want them when you reach this climbing mecca. Skaha Bluffs is a well-known sport climbing crag with over 250 climbs to pull on. There’s also some trad routes for the gear junkies. Don’t be fooled, this crag can be a rock oven in summer. Most locals and nearby British Columbians migrate here in the spring and autumn to climb in the cooler months. Although even on an unpredictably hot autumn day, you can still shelter under some shady corridors like Redtail.

  1. Things to note - once upon a time, there must have been some serious car break-ins at the car park. There is usually a security guy who sits and watches over the vehicles while the climbers explore. You can pop some cash in their donation box to say thanks.

  2. There are drop toilets here with hand sanitiser.

Car Camping

Car camping or vanlife is ideal for staying on cheap in Skaha. There are some great pullouts along Eastside Road for stealth car camping. For a secret, quieter spot off the road, wander down Sunnybrook Dr.

Float Penticton

Smack bang between Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake is a relaxing river channel that locals and tourists float down on the regular. Pack your floatie if you’ve got one or you can hire from Float Penticton. Definitly recommend this little adventure. In late September it took us 2 hours to float down this lazy river, complete with friendly ducks and Canadian geese.

Paddle Board at the Nude Beach

Three Mile Beach in Penticton is a hot spot for birthday suites on a warm day. Friendly atmosphere minus the creepers = a chill day on the beach. This sweet little lake beach has a number of different tucked-away spots to lay down your towel. But the icing on top is the couple of shared old windsurf boards, complete with paddles for water adventurers. Out on the boards, we spotted fish and underwater islands that were fun to explore.
